Salt vs Saltless Water Treatment Systems

There are a lot of great things to love about the Orlando area. We have theme parks, amazing restaurants, and great shopping at each corner of Orange county. Our tap water system, however, is not the best out there. For many homeowners, there’s no question about whether or not to install a water filtration system at home, but there is a question about whether it’s best to use a salt-based or salt-free system. We at Home Makeover Systems in Longwood, FL have helped many with installing water treatment Orlando homeowners need for clean, soft water. Because of this, we can use our experience to lead you in the right direction for choosing your own system.

Salt vs Saltless: What’s the Difference?

First and foremost, what is water softening? In your middle school science classes, you learned at some point that water is a combination of hydrogen and oxygen–H2O (two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom). This is true for pure distilled water, but the moment that water comes in contact with a surface, it will pick up minerals, so there’s actually more going on in the water than you think. Fun fact, water does NOT conduct electricity, but electricity will jump between all the minerals in the water, which is what makes it dangerous when electronics and water mix. Water is softened when the minerals of calcium and magnesium are removed from it.

With a salt-based filtration system, the water will go through a process called “ion exchange.” The filter itself will consist of a fiberglass resin tank with a mounted, electronic metered valve. Water will be metered through the filter by the gallon where the electronic valve purges the calcium and magnesium from the water and flushing them down the drain. Then the water that comes out of your faucet or showerhead will be soft and free of any hardness particles.

A salt-free filter on the other hand, doesn’t actually soften the water it’s filtering. Instead, they condition the water, changing the form of the calcium and magnesium so that they don’t adhere to surfaces. This is done through a process called Template Assisted Crystallization (or TAC). This water will not be soft like with a salt-based filtration system, but there is no electricity usage, nor excess water that gets flushed.

The Water Filtration System for You

Now that you know more about what each filtration system does, which one is right for you? The bottom line is that a salt-based filtration system will give you truly soft, pure water while a salt-free system will not. True, soft water will do better at giving you brighter clothes, softer showers, and better quality water, but it will also require more electricity usage and generate more water waste. A salt-free system won’t, and it will still give you cleaner showers and a cleaner taste. There are pros and cons to both, so it ultimately depends on what you feel is a greater priority for your home.
